Portales, NM – Roosevelt County has been awarded $2,734,788 through the NM Department of Transportation Project Fund Grant. The County applied for this funding based upon identified needs highlighted in the County’s 5-year Road Maintenance Plan. The funding will be utilized to enhance approximately 62 miles of County Maintained Roadways, with about 59 miles of chip sealed roadways to be resurfaced with an micro-seal emulsion.

“This is the third consecutive year Road Superintendent Rick Lovato and Special Projects Coordinator Carol Acosta-Flores have applied for this grant funding,” stated County Manager Amber Hamilton. “Each year the application has been enhanced to reflect the extensive planning and needs within the County and this award will be instrumental in our continued maintenance program. The ask was bold, well-documented and justified in the funding application.”

“It’s such a great time for Roosevelt County! Anytime we are able to bring in grant dollars to the local economy is wonderful, and when we can secure large awards such as this – we are confident we can make substantial improvements to our roadways,” said Commissioner Dennis Lopez. “We are appreciative of NM Department of Transportation District II Engineer Francisco Sanchez and Local Government Liaison George Dodge, and our team members Mrs. Acosta-Flores, Mr. Lovato and Mrs. Hamilton.”

The 5-year plan was constructed by the Commission and County personnel and is revised annually, following public road workshops, public input and commission direction. You can view this plan on the County’s website at www.rooseveltcounty.com on the Road Maintenance page.

“One of my favorite quotes is by Benjamin Franklin ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!’” stated Lovato. “I truly believe we must continue to look forward in our planning and purpose to address our ongoing road maintenance needs.”
