PORTALES, NM – Brad Morrison from Research & Polling, Inc. presented the Commission with three options for redistricting on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021 during their regular meeting. These plans are available for public viewing on the County website on the Commission page. There are links to the presentation, current districts, and the three plans.

Here is some basic information about the plans as provided by Research & Polling, Inc.:

Plan A: The “Status Quo” plan. This plan moves District 4 one block further east into the city (from Ave C to Ave B). This balances the population in all the districts and effects the fewest people.

Plan B: This plan has District 1 backing out of Portales slightly (to the North). We had to split precinct 17 to accomplish this. This allows District 4 to push further into the heart of the city (all the way up to Chicago Ave).

Plan C: This was an attempt to do something different. This plan has District 2 taking a large portion of District 3 in the southern portion of the county. District 3 pushes further into the city and District 2 backs out of the city more.

All of these plans maintain the incumbents in their existing districts. Plans A and C continue to have Precinct 12 split in the city. Plan B splits precincts 12 and 17.

The Commission will hold a public hearing on Dec. 21, 2021 during the regular commission meeting to allow  public comment. The public is strongly encouraged to view the plans and share your thoughts with the commission. If you are unable to attend the meeting on Dec. 21, please contact your Commissioner as their contact information is listed on the County’s website.
