History:
Roosevelt County was named after the 26th president of the United States in 1903. There is approximately 2,449 square miles, with a population of about 20,000. Communities in Roosevelt County include Causey, Dora, Elida, Floyd and Portales. Portales was founded in 1894 and is the county seat. At an altitude of 4009 feet, the climate allows for abundant sunshine with low relative humidity. The mean annual temperature is 64F degrees. Annual precipitation reaches 17.17 inches. Roosevelt County is one of the nation’s largest producer of Valencia peanuts and the largest producer of organic Valencia peanut butter. Other crops include corn, milo, wheat, alfalfa, potatoes and cotton. Dairy production is also a major industry. Portales is also home to ENMU with a student population of 4,300 students. Cannon Air Force Base is located 17 miles from Portales and is home to the 27th Special Operations Wing. The diversity of Roosevelt County makes it a truly exciting place to visit and live.
